The Body : A Natural Source of Healing
Naturism : An 18th-Century Medical Theory
Originally, the term “naturism” did not refer to a practice associated with nudity, but to a medical doctrine. At the end of the Enlightenment, physicians developed the concept of vis medicatrix naturae, the idea that the body possesses all the resources it needs to heal itself when illness strikes.
The physician’s role therefore became that of an assistant : observing how symptoms developed and intervening only when necessary. This theory reflected the therapeutic skepticism of doctors who were increasingly questioning treatments they considered more dangerous than the diseases themselves.
In the 19th century, the body’s natural defenses were stripped of their almost sacred status and studied from a more scientific perspective. The body’s ability to resist viruses was no longer a mystery, but was understood as the organs’ capacity to fight off microbes and restore normal functioning.
Illness, meanwhile, came to be defined as a pathological condition requiring medical intervention in order to be treated.
The Rise of Natural Therapies in the 19th Century
Faced with growing competition from modern medicine, proponents of medical naturism began to adapt their practices. A German reform movement championed natural therapies, presenting them as a remedy for the ills of modern life. Poor sanitation in working-class neighborhoods and rapid urbanization were taking a toll on public health, with people increasingly suffering from pollution.
This “return to nature” involved exposing the body to natural elements, particularly water (hydrotherapy), sunlight (heliotherapy), and fresh air (aerotherapy). It was recommended that people undress completely during these treatments, as the benefits of nature were believed to be more effective when applied directly to bare skin.
It is this body-positive approach that inspires the Elixia institute, inviting you to remove your clothes before experiencing its massages and making the most of the benefits they offer.
Nudity: An Act of Personal and Political Activism
A Wave of Freedom from Germany in the 20th Century
Building on the German reform movement, the FKK movement "Freikörperkultur" or “free-body culture” grew significantly in East Germany after the Second World War. Collective nudity became increasingly popular, as naturism allowed people to shed social markers and interact with one another as equals.
As early as the 1920s, the first naturist centers began to emerge in France and Germany. Sports and physical activity became a central part of life at these sites, both for the health and well-being of visitors and as a way of pursuing an aesthetic ideal of a slim, healthy body.
After the Second World War, naturist beaches flourished along the Baltic Sea. In France, naturist beaches were established on the Île du Levant in 1960. Today, France is the world’s leading naturist destination, with around 2.5 million people practicing naturism there every year.

Our Relationship with Nudity : A Reflection of Our Intimacy
Nudity is a cultural construct shaped by our relationship with ourselves and our interactions with others. It is both an idea and a deeply physical experience. Europe’s Christian heritage has contributed to the enduring association between nudity and shame, notably through the biblical story of Adam and Eve.
In response to social expectations around modesty and, in particular, the idea that sexual attributes should be concealed, undressing can become an act of self-expression and liberation. Beyond sexuality, a naked body in a public space can challenge, attract attention, or even provoke, as illustrated by Femen activists, who display their slogans across their bare chests.
The body-positive movement has led to greater representation of nude bodies in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and skin tones. This growing culture of self-acceptance has marked an important step toward promoting greater diversity in the media and in everyday life.
